AStA Shop
Stationery and everyday supplies for students. Central and convenient to campus. In Gießen next to the canteen in the A10. In Friedberg in building A3.

Bike rental system (Nextbike)
Free use of the rental bikes in Giessen for 30 minutes. Instructions are available at: Nextbike. You can register on this Nextbike website.
Outdoor pool flat
In summer semesters: Free admission to all outdoor pools of the Stadtwerke Gießen with the student ID card. For a 5 euro deposit, a season pass can be purchased to get into the outdoor pools faster.
Theater ticket
3 days before the show there are free remaining tickets for students. Tickets are available at the House of Cards.
Semester ticket
Free travel on regional public transport in the RMV and NVV areas with a valid student ID. More information and the area of validity can be found on the RMV website.
The upgrade to the Deutschlandticket will no longer be offered by RMV from 01.04.2025.
Legal expenses insurance
All THM students have legal protection insurance in the areas of tenancy, contract and property law, as well as in some areas of administrative law. You can find more information on the extent to which the areas are covered and how you can make use of the legal protection insurance at asta.thm.de/rechtsschutz
Solifonds
The Solifonds for students in financial need is an association of the ASten of THM and JLU. Students may apply for financial aid. Read more on the Solifonds page.
International student card
You can apply for an International Student Card in our AStA stores.
Cargo bike

The AStA
The AStA is the executive body of the student body. We represent all students of the THM outside and inside the THM. Our tasks cover numerous subject areas, for example
- Semester ticket
- Bicycle rental system
- (Legal) advice
- Parties & Welcome Week
- Student council networking
- Management of all finances of the student body
- First point of contact for problems
and much more.
The AStA is organized in units. These are grouped into departments. Each department is assigned to a member of the Board of Management. Further details on the departments and the units can be found in the other tabs. The minutes of the AStA meetings are in the AStA Moodle course. The AStA Board
The AStA Board manages and coordinates the work of all units of the AStA. It represents the AStA externally and is the only one who can make legally binding declarations on behalf of the AStA.
The AStA board consists of the chairperson and the department heads of the AStA. Within a department, each department head (RL) supervises and coordinates the work of the units. The chairperson is responsible for the management of the board. He*She is the first point of contact for all inquiries to the AStA. The chairperson is therefore also assisted by the secretariat for answering inquiries.
Finance department
Finance department
The Finance Department is responsible for organizing and handling all financial tasks and duties of the AStA and the student body of the THM. It reports to the Head of Finance.
The primary responsibilities of the Finance Department are:
- manage the accounting of the AStA
- Preparation of the budget of the student body
- Disbursement of funds to
- the professional associations
- the unit of the AStA
- Financial management
- the AStA stores (teaching materials department)
- the expense allowance for the speakers
- of the wages of the employees of the AStA
- of the StuPa funds
Teaching materials unit
The Teaching Materials Department (LMR for short) coordinates the work in the AStA Shop. It reports to the Head of Finance.
The AStA store supplies and accompanies students during their studies with teaching materials and information about everyday study life and is the first point of contact directly on campus. There are AStA stores in Friedberg and Gießen. Similarly, there is one instructional materials unit per site.
The major responsibilities of the Instructional Materials Unit are:
- Coordination of the employees in the AStA store
- Administrative activities around the AStA-Shop
Home Affairs Division
IT Department
The IT department of the AStA takes care of the entire IT infrastructure of the AStA and its administration. It reports to the head of the IT department.
The main tasks of the IT unit are:
- Active Directory setup and administration
- Administration of the AStA and student council mailing lists
- Administration of the AStA website
- Software connection of new computers
- Administration of the AStA servers and setup of new servers
- Implementation of new IT projects
The IT unit is supported by an IT support unit. It supports AStA members with acute technical problems in the AStA as well as with the hardware connections of computers and other components.
Public Relations Department
The Public Relations Department takes care of the social media channels and the AStA website and fills them with content from all departments.
The main tasks of the unit are:
- Make sure that you are informed about the work and current events of the AStA (plan contributions from all units)
- Writes a brochure with important information for first-year students every semester, the “THM-AStA-Start-Heft“.
- Maintains AStA’s social media channels(Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).
- Responds to comments on all social media channels + website
Culture & Politics
Equality & political education
The Department for Equality and Political Education helps THM students deal with discrimination of any kind. It also organizes events on various political topics.
The main tasks of the unit are:
- Contact point for victims of discrimination of any kind
- Raising awareness of gender equality issues through events
- Education on various political topics through events
Higher Education Policy
The Department for University Policy participates in the THM’s committees and thus in the university’s self-administration. The officers advocate for the will of the students and maintain contact with other ASten. They organize demonstrations or write press releases. We are committed to…
- A student financing system that is independent of parents and enables all students to pursue full-time studies without having to work on the side.
- The funding of universities so that the core tasks of research and teaching can be performed well, without the need for money and the influence of economic interests of third parties.
- Reducing the ability of companies to influence the freedom of study and teaching
- the expansion of opportunities for student participation at the university

Culture & International
The main task of the Department of Culture and International Affairs is to support international students and to provide assistance in the implementation of projects. We help you with everyday problems and provide you with the most important information.
The main tasks of the unit are:
- Welcoming foreign students
- Issue of ISIC (International Student Identity Card)
- Advising students in emergency situations, especially foreign students.
- Information about the THM Buddy Program & Buddy Café
Consulting & Environment
Mobility department
The Mobility Department takes care of everything to do with mobility in Friedberg, Giessen and Wetzlar as well as at the THM itself. The Mobility Department is a member of the State ASten Conference in the area of transportation. It also organizes events around the traffic turnaround in Giessen and Friedberg.
The main tasks of the unit are:
- Participation in the Landes-ASten-Konferenz (LAK) on the topic of mobility
- Organization of events and lectures on the topic of traffic (change)
- Participation in the traffic turnaround in Friedberg, Giessen and Wetzlar
- Participation in meetings of the city on the topic of traffic (turnaround)
BAföG and social welfare
The Department for BAföG and Social Affairs answers general questions about BAföG and helps if you have problems with your BAföG application.
The main tasks of the unit are:
- General questions and assistance on the subject of BAföG
- Help with filling out BAföG applications
- Assistance with rejection notices
- General questions and assistance on the topic of alternative student financing.
- Forwarding to Solifonds and KfW
Sustainability
In order to draw attention to a responsible and mindful use of the environment and resources, the Sustainability Department develops concepts at our university and participates in corresponding committees. It also plans and organizes events around the topics of ecological, economic and social sustainability.
The main tasks of the unit are:
- Implementation of events on the topic of sustainability
- Cooperation with the sustainability department of the THM presidium and the AStA of the JLU
- Collaboration in THM committees on the topic of sustainability
- Development of concepts for sustainability at the THM
- Communication with the city and municipal bodies on the subject of sustainability
Event department
Events Giessen & Friedberg
Events Department plans and organizes events for students at THM. It also assists the student councils with their events and provides various items for loan.
The main tasks of the Events Department are:
- Plan events for THM students
- Supporting professional associations with advice and assistance at their events
- Issue of rental equipment for events at the THM
The event department exists once each for the location Friedberg and Gießen.
Games Giessen & Friedberg
The games department of the AStA organizes regular games nights at the Giessen and Friedberg campuses. No matter if you brought your favorite game or an existing tabletop. There is something for everyone. Just come by without registration, we are looking forward to you!
The main tasks of the unit are:
- Organization of at least two AStA game nights per week
- Organize game weekends
- Joint trip to the SPIEL in Essen
The player department exists once each for the location Friedberg and Gießen.
STEP & Freshmen
The STEP unit takes care of the planning and organization of first bags for the THM. In addition, the STEP unit supports the events unit in the planning and implementation of the STEP weeks.
The main tasks of the Stepreferat are:
- Concept of THM first bags
- Organize sponsors for the first bags
- Communication with the student representatives
- Organize the distribution of the first bags to the student representatives
- Support and organization of a THM city rally
- Support and organization of the campus tour during the first week

Committees
Student Parliament (StuPa)
The Student Parliament (StuPa) is the highest body of the student body. Among other things, it decides on the budget and the semester fee and elects all members of the AStA, RPA, ÄRa and election committee. All students of the THM elect the members of the StuPa with the committee election for one year.
The StuPa has a dynamic number of seats based on the number of students (7 fixed seats + 1 seat per 2000 students, rounded down).
The StuPa is led by the StuPa presidium. Minutes and invitation are in the Moodle course of the StuPa.
Council of Elders (ÄRa)
The Council of Elders (ÄRa) is the arbitration body of the student body. It verifies the legality of elections or resolutions. The ÄRa consists of three members who may not hold any other office in the student body.
Election Committee (WahlA)
As a committee of the Student Parliament, the Elections Committee is responsible for the proper conduct of committee elections. All students are eligible to run for the Elections Committee.
Audit Committee (RPA)
As a committee of the StuPa, the Audit Committee (RPA) controls the finances of the student body, especially the AStA and the student councils. Each StuPa list sends one representative to the RPA.
Finance Committee of the THM Student Representatives (FdFS)
The Finance Committee of the student councils of the THM manages the free funds of the student councils as a committee of the StuPa. One member of each FSR sits on the committee.
Student Representative Council (FSR)
The Fachschafsrat (FSR) is composed of the students of a department elected in the committee elections. He is the first point of contact for problems in the department and manages the money of the students of the department. Members are also expected to organize events for students and recruit members for departmental committees.
